As promised, here’s a post on building your own banh mi. A perfect banh mi is like great concert. Mix in great audience interaction by letting guests build their own banh mi at gatherings.

The bread: Vietnamese breads are airy and light texture and very crispy crust. If you live close to a Vietnamese bakery, be sure to grab these. It definitely will make a difference.  If you can’t locate a Vietnamese bakery, French baguette or even Hawaiian rolls can be substitutes.  The bread sets the “stage” for a perfect meal.

The protein: The possibilities are endless here. You can serve with cold cuts, meat balls, fried tofu or even pulled pork, or shredded pork skin will do. Choose your “rock star” carefully!

The spread: Usually liver pate & mayonnaise. The spread makes the banh mi richer and added more flavors to the protein. Doesn’t get as much attention at the rock star but this is the band that plays the music!

The others: These are the backup singers, sound team, and makeup artist of the world. The vegetables, pickles, seasoning sauce are key ingredients. Vegetables such as cilantro, sliced cucumbers and jalapenos or Thai chilies are a must. It may be a small ingredient, but you can’t have a banh mi without the pickles! The seasoning sauce adds the finishing touches and closes out the night with smoothing melody.

Instructions:

Cut the bread in half lengthwise.
Spread pate and mayo on the bottom side of the bread.
Layers cold cut or meat balls, or your choice of protein on top of the pate
Add a layers of cucumbers, pickles. Don’t forget to sprinkles some maggi or seasoning sauce.
